Workshop Materials Lists

    Bring digital camera to workshops if you own one.



 

Workshop: Circlemania (Scenic Road to California or Wandering Trail or Fearless Circles)

List of Materials: For participants

      Please bring a sewing machine, extension cord, sewing kit, rotary cutter and board , see-through ruler, compass, paper and pencil, colored pencils and eraser.
     Fabric (dark, medium and light, patterned or solids, outrageous or sedate) yardage works best. You can crazy-piece or strip-piece the background and therefore also use scraps or strips. The amount depends on the size of your blocks and the size of the quilt.
Optional: Flexible curve. Template material and graph paper (12 inch blocks for large designs). Acrylic squares, 8 inches or bigger. Threads for quilting and embellishing. Digital camera. EQ5 (If you understand it.)
Sheet or batting to use as a design wall. Batting and backing material.

Class requirements:
We also need 2 - 3 irons. Design walls. Please check that there are enough outlets and power for all the sewing machines.
 
 


Workshop: Striptrees or Divide and Conquer

List of Materials: For participants

      Please bring a sewing machine, extension cord, sewing kit, rotary cutter and board, see-through ruler, pape, pencil, and eraser.
     Fabric for background (dark, medium and light, patterned or solids, outrageous or sedate) yardage works best. Contrasting fabrics for strips.
Optional: template material and graph paper (12 inch blocks for large designs). Colored pencils Acrylic Squares, 8 inch or bigger. Flexible curve. Tools for making bias strips. Threads for quilting and embellishing.
Sheet or batting to use as a design wall. Batting and backing material. Digital camera.

Class requirements:
We also need 2 - 3 irons. Design walls. Please check that there are enough outlets and power for all the sewing machines.
 
 

Workshop: Persian Miniatures

List of Materials: For participants

Please bring your sewing kit, sewing machine (extension cord), rotary cutter and board, a see-through ruler and fabric, cotton or cotton blends. The latter can include floral fabrics (small and large), calicoes, stars, geometrics, ikats, plaids, palm trees, fish or birds, polka dots, novelty and ethnic designs. Jewel colored fabrics, dark rich fabrics and interior design fabrics also work very well. We will work with small pieces, if you have it bring your scrap bag and leftover triangles from other projects

Also bring a small amount of batting and 1/2 yard of backing fabric and flannel, batting or gray fabric to design on.

Optional: special threads and needles for machine quilting, fusible material to glue small details, flannel, batting or gray fabric to design on.

We also need 2 - 3 irons. Please check that there are enough outlets and power for all the sewing machines.

Design walls for each student and as much workspace as is possible.

 
 

Workshop: Small Towns

List of Materials: For participants

Please bring sewing machine, extension cord, sewing kit, rotary cutter and board, see-through ruler, template material, fabric scraps (cotton or cotton blends are best, fabric with people, trees, flowers, animals, cars are fun to use, they do not have to be the same scale), notepaper and pencil, yardage for the back and batting if we get to finish the quilt.

Optional: special threads and needles for machine quilting, fusible material to glue small details, flannel, batting or gray fabric to design on.

Class requirements: We also need 2 - 3 irons. Please check that there are enough outlets and power for all the sewing machines.
Design walls for each student and as much workspace as is possible.

 

Workshop: Crazypiecing

List of Materials: For participants

Please bring sewing machine, extension cord, sewing kit, rotary cutter and board, see-through ruler, template material, fabric scraps (large and medium prints or solids, cotton or cotton blends are best, a scrap bag works well for experimenting) and/or small amounts of many fabrics that work well together, notepaper and pencil, glue stick and paper,

Optional: Acrylic square (6, 8, 10, or 12 in.) or triangular ruler, scrap bag to share. For longer workshop: yardage for the back and batting, machine quilting thread optional.

Digital camera.

Class requirements: We also need 2 - 3 irons. Please check that there are enough outlets and power for all the sewing machines.

Slide projector to show slides for inspiration and a room that can be darkened.

Design walls for each student and as much workspace as is possible.





Workshop: Dancing Rings (Formerly called Triple Play)

List of Materials: For participants

Please bring a sewing machine, extension cord, sewing kit, rotary cutter and board, see-through ruler, paper and pencil, colored pencils, glue stick and eraser.

Fabric (dark, medium and light, patterned or solids, outrageous or sedate) yardage works best. You can crazy-piece or strip-piece the large rings and therefore also use scraps or strips. The amount depends on the size of your blocks and the size of the quilt. My blocks are usually 10 or 12 inches.

Template material ( If you work with blocks larger than 8 in. bring template material or cardboard big enough to accommodate the shapes), compass (optional) and graph paper (12 inch blocks for large designs). Sheet or batting to use as a design wall. Batting and backing material. Digital camera (optional)

Workshop: Magic Square

Please bring a sewing machine, extension cord, sewing kit, rotary cutter and board, see-through ruler, fabric scraps, light to dark, varied, medium scale prints. (A scrap bag to share and to glue works well). Fabric (dark, medium and light, patterned or solids, outrageous or sedate), yardage works best, but you can also crazy-piece or strip-piece the blocks and therefore use scraps or strips. Paper and pencil, colored pencils and/or magic markers, glue stick and eraser. See-through template material and graph paper. Sheet or batting to use as a design wall. Digital camera (optional)

Kaleidoscope grid paper (made by Grafix) I will bring this.

For a one day class you can sew at home, it is very easy technically, therefore we will just pin the designs and not worry about sewing machines.

Workshop: Letters to the World

Workshop Description
We will take an idea or a feeling and transform it into a quilt. The ideas can range from protest about the environment, crime, war etc. to feelings about
homesickness, love, hope, marriage etc.I will act as a facilitator. I will bring examples and lots of ideas. We will do some exercises on paper. We will start to design
a quilt and discuss these designs. This is a group process. We will not criticize but share our reactions and ideas.

Supply list

Ideas (All of these are suggestions)
Newspapers or magazines, greeting cards
Books or quilt magazines that show protest or celebration quilts. (There are classical quilts with political themes as well as contemporary ones)
Quilt book with many blocks and their names if you have it. (Many block names add to the message we are trying to convey e.g. Double Wedding Ring for wedding, Broken Dishes for divorce, Road to California for travel etc.)
Sketches and doodles of your idea
Protest or celebration quilt pictures to look at

Design
White paper and graph paper
Glue or gluestick
Paper scissors
Ruler, eraser, pencil
Coloured pencils or magic markers
Fabric scraps, small pieces 4 inches and below. Many colours. (We will use these to glue some exercises. The smaller pieces make you work more freely and we
can share them.)

Making the quilt
Sewing kit

Template material (If you piece your top)
Fusible material if you applique that way
Fabric relevant to your theme, other
Flannel, batting or gray fabric to design on.

Optional: special threads and needles for machine quilting or embellishing. Beads, buttons, lace etc. Only for longer workshops. Digital camera.

Things to think about
What technique are you using, piecing or applique or both. (Bring relevant material for each technique)
Are you going to use photo transfers? If so you'd have to make these ahead and bring them.
Symbols that apply to your theme. (Sun, stars, flags, for instance: mountain=strength, dandelion=persistence, house=homesickness, family, rainbow=hope etc.)
