Nancy Halpern - One Day (or Expanded) Workshops
Trailblazers
Explorations in linear design, based on familiar
designs such as Wild Goose Chase and Tree Everlasting, this workshop expands these horizons to include
all sorts of patterns that may be constructed in strips or bands - washlines, fences, highways, calendars; repetitions,
progressions, transitions and passages.
Design. 20 students, all levels.
Nature, Landscape and Quiltmaking
Participants will develop original quilt designs from the geometric suggestions
of natural objects (leaves, flowers, stars), and assemble these into a
"quilt landscape." Designs will be primarily pieced, but possibilities
for applique will also be considered.
Design. 20 students, intermediate & advanced.
Architectural Forms for Quiltmakers
Participants will use traditional and/or original.quilt designs suggested
by architectural forms (houses, windows, roof-lines) to work out a quilt
or wall-hanging. Optical illusions and three-dimensional effects will be
explored, and designs may be incorporated into an abstract or representational
land- or cityscape. Design. 20 students, intermediate & advanced.

The Masterpiece Scrap Quilt Workshop
Integrated and exciting quilts from a large variety of fabric. Short exercises
in color, contrast, transparency, rhythm and brilliance in the morning
will be followed by a small project in the afternoon.
Color and Design. 20 students, all levels. Class
fee for workbook.
Quilts....Pieced, Painted and Dyed
A sampler of dye and surface design techniques which range from painting
with cold-water fiber-reactive procion dyes to tie-dyeing and an assortment
of 'quickies.' This workshop (LOTS of fun!) stimulates individual imagery
and use of color, and encourages both precision and spontaneity.
2-DAY WORKSHOP
Dye Techniques. 16 students, all levels. $5 class
fee covers dyes.
Expanded Workshops All workshops listed above may be combined or expanded
into longer units. For example, Architecture, Landscape and Quiltmaking
(#2 ( #3). In a week-long version of Pieced, Painted and Dyed, students
would combine their dyed fabrics
with an original design project, and additional dye techniques could
be tried. In general, students benefit greatly from design workshops that
last longer than one day.
